Most of what people call custom shutters is built after the order, to measurements of one opening. Impact-rated storm shutters add another constraint: the tested assembly only works if it is installed the way that assembly was listed. Neither job is a stock board you trim on Saturday and forget. This page is about those limits, and about ordinary care of wood shutters once they are up.

Ordered, then built

Interior plantation shutters in the custom trade are produced to the width and height you submit. One large retailer’s guide tells you to send the exact inside-opening size and to let the factory take the deductions. That sequence means a mistake is discovered when the crate arrives, not while you are still holding the tape. Lead time is whatever that maker quotes. This site does not publish a typical number of weeks, because no single lead time was verified.

Exterior decorative panels can be simpler, and many are sold in a list of standard heights. The five Amazon listings in the side column are that kind of product: a stated width and height, sold as a pair, not a panel cut to a tape reading you send this site. If the published height is not the height of the window, the pair will look wrong even if it is firmly screwed on. FEMA’s 2005 fact sheet says large and unusually shaped windows need custom shutters, or else impact-resistant glass. Plan on the opening you have, not on a neighbor’s width.

Why impact-rated work is not casual carpentry

FEMA’s 2022 fact sheet calls storm-shutter deployment an active measure. Someone must be available to close and secure the shutters before the storm and to open them afterward. Upper levels may require equipment as well as labor. That is the using of a shutter that is already installed. The installing is stricter.

  • Only shutters with a label that they have been tested and are building-code compliant belong in that role (FEMA, March 2022).
  • They must be securely connected to the wall framing, not merely to trim.
  • The 2005 fact sheet says to avoid fastening them to the window frame or to the face of brick veneer, and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Wood panels have to be anchored so they do not become wind-borne debris. FEMA points to APA T450 and to IBC section 1609.2 for thickness guidance. Those documents were not copied into a homemade cutting list here. If the panel thickness and the fastener schedule are not in the instructions in your hand, you do not have a complete design.
  • Temporary plywood and manufactured panels have to be put up and taken down. The 2005 sheet calls upper levels difficult. Doing that for the first time after a watch is posted is how fasteners end up in the wrong member.

None of this says a careful owner can never mount a listed panel system. It says the listing, the anchors, and the framing are the work, and a decorative hinge screwed into siding is a different project. Several of the side-column listings describe an easy install with included screws or plugs. That is their claim about hanging a decorative pair. It is not a claim, on those pages, of a tested wind assembly. ShuttersDirect.com does not install shutters and does not check anyone’s wall.

Caring for wood shutters

Preservation Brief 47, from the National Park Service, is written for historic buildings, and its shutter notes transfer to any exterior wood shutter you hope to keep:

  • Inspect shutters with the other window parts. Look for loose panels, open joints, cracked hardware, and hinges that no longer hold the leaf.
  • Take weakened or loose shutters down and store them until they are repaired. A loose shutter in a windstorm is a hazard, not a detail.
  • Cover exposed end grain at the top with a zinc or painted-metal cap. The brief says that extends the life of the shutter.
  • Repaint windows and shutters when the film fails. The brief’s range is every five to seven years, depending on exposure and climate. South and west walls, and any top edge that faces the sky, age faster than a shaded north wall. Do not treat five years as a deadline or seven as permission to skip a wall that is already bare.
  • Do not leave wood unpainted for long once old paint is scraped off. The brief says light degrades the bare surface and the next paint fails early. Prime it.
  • There is no maintenance-free exterior, including synthetic coverings sold that way. The brief says so directly. A vinyl or polypropylene decorative shutter may need less paint than bare wood. It still needs fasteners that hold and a look at the wall behind it. “Maintenance-free” on a product page is the seller’s wording, not a finding of this site.

Interior wood and faux-wood louvers mostly need dusting. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not hose them or run water into the tilt rod and staples. Hardware that sticks usually needs a drop of lubricant on the hinge pin, not a soaked louver. If a panel binds, the frame may have been forced into an out-of-square opening. Forcing it further splits stiles. See the measuring page before you reorder.

What this site will not tell you to do

It will not give a plywood thickness, a nail size, a design pressure, or a “this product survived that hurricane” claim. Those belong to a tested assembly and to the code in force where the house stands. If you are buying for wind and debris, read the label, keep the instructions, and ask the building department what that jurisdiction requires before you drill the wall.

Not advice. ShuttersDirect.com is an educational guide. It does not manufacture, sell, fabricate, install, or ship shutters, and it is not an engineer, installer, or building official. Whether a shutter is right for an opening, and whether it counts as wind or debris protection, depends on the product label, how it is attached, and the rules in force for that building. Read the maker’s instructions and check with the local building department before ordering or installing anything meant for wind or flying debris.
